Indigenous Foundation Module Reviewer (Contract Position, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia)
The Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) is a non–profit organization that delivers pre-Bar call legal education for aspiring lawyers in Canada.
CPLED delivers the Bar admission program to aspiring lawyers in Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. To be called to the Bar, students must complete their law society’s articling requirement and CPLED’s Bar admission program, the Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP).
CPLED is dedicated to helping students hone their practical skills and assessing how well they can apply their legal knowledge and skills in everyday situations—assisting new lawyers to be well-equipped to meet the demands of practice. CPLED maintains a high standard of programs and services for students to ensure a strong transition into the legal profession.
As part of CPLED ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, CPLED has launched a large-scale revision of PREP based on feedback from focus groups and other external stakeholders. CPLED plays a crucial role in the training and preparation of new lawyers; it is essential to prepare lawyers in fairness and equity by developing cultural understanding and humility. CPLED is committed to ensuring equity and inclusion in the Bar admission program.
Historically, Indigenous cultural competency training and education have been an area of deficiency in many sectors, including the legal profession. As a result, law societies and law schools across Canada are all working to address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action by developing Indigenous cultural competency education, which covers Indigenous cultures and peoples, conflict resolution, human rights and anti-racism.
CPLED believes strongly that the Indigenous lawyers in the community should develop the Indigenous cultural competency training for PREP.
As a contractor competing jurisdictional reviews of the PREP content, you will help to ensure that future lawyers are well-equipped to meet the demands of the legal profession.
Indigenous Module Reviewers are required through the winter for the Indigenous Foundation Module. The Indigenous Foundation Module was created to provide students with the base knowledge required to explore further legal issues affecting indigenous peoples and how to work best with indigenous clients.
As an Indigenous Foundation Module Reviewer, you will review the content of the Indigenous Module to identify the accuracy and completeness of the basic knowledge provided.
Interested Contractors should be ready to commit to reviewing materials between February 6, 2023, to March 20, 2023.
- Review the content of the Indigenous Module for accuracy and completeness of the basic knowledge and to provide input on any additional content required.
- Identify instructional clarity.
- 5 + Years of experience years of practice experience or similar experience within the legal community.
- Strong understanding of Indigenous history, laws and cultures in one or more provinces, such as Alberta, Manitoba, Nunavut, Saskatchewan or Nova Scotia.
- Strong knowledge and respect for Indigenous cultural traditions, languages, ceremonies, and protocols involving Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous communities.
- A strong connection to the Indigenous legal community and wider Indigenous community across Alberta, Manitoba, Nunavut, Saskatchewan or Nova Scotia.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and SharePoint.
- Excellent writing and verbal communication.
- Successful candidates must be in good standing with no current disciplinary actions with their law society.
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.
Each Contractor of the Indigenous Module review is not an employee of CPLED. Contractors will receive an honorarium of the sum of $750.
