The Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) launched the online Legal Research and Writing (LRW) course worldwide in January 2022. Since launching the course, CPLED has surveyed students to gather feedback on the course and its delivery. The survey feedback indicated that students would like more time to complete their assignments. Beginning with the Spring 2023 offering, students will now have nine weeks to complete the course.
CPLED will also reduce the number of course offerings per year to four. At each offering, student enrolment capacity will increase to accommodate the reduced number of course offerings per year. Tuition fees for the course will increase to CDN $425. CPLED conducted an analysis, and $425 is competitive and, in some cases, lower than similar courses offered through universities.
The LRW course helps internationally trained law students learn how to write and conduct research for the Canadian legal system. CPLED worked in partnership with the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) to design the LRW course, and it is considered a valuable tool in helping NCA students prepare to write their NCA exams.
The course consists of two modules and four assignments that include a research and writing component. Students receive valuable feedback on their assignments from trained Assessors who are practising lawyers with a minimum of five years of experience.
Registration for the Spring 2023 offering of the LRW course opens on Wednesday, January 18, 2023. Please note registration is subject to capacity limits. For more information on course offerings and registration, visit the LRW course section of the CPLED website.
