Are you interested in becoming a part of aspiring lawyers’ journey to becoming a successful lawyer in Canada? The Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) is a non–profit organization that delivers pre-Bar call legal education and is seeking PREP Assessment Advisors who will share duties during a one year contract.
The Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP) was developed to help future lawyers gain practical legal knowledge and competencies in lawyer skills, practice management, professional ethics, and the attributes needed to successfully practice law in Canada.
*The Assessment Advisors will share this role and responsibilities, working in tandem and sharing the responsibilities to meet the position’s expectations.
Contract Term
- Accelerated PREP 2025 (Summer) – May 26-August 28, 2025
- PREP June 2, 2025 – February 12, 2026
- Accelerated PREP 2025 (Fall) – September 2-December 4, 2025
* Preference will be given to those candidates who are available for all of the above intakes.
What Will You Do as a PREP Assessment Advisor?
- Share the following duties equally with the other Assessment Advisor(s).
- Support VLF Assessors and Capstone Evaluators in ensuring consistency in the determination of candidate competency level and the provision of high-quality written feedback on assignments.
- Participate in developing and delivering onboarding/training for new VLF Assessors and Capstone Evaluators.
- Review and provide feedback on practice assessments for VLF Assessors and Capstone Evaluators prior to their commencement in Accelerated PREP (to be completed in May 2025).
- During each intake of Accelerated PREP and PREP, the PREP Assessment Advisor will:
- Prepare two Review Reports for approximately 15 VLF Assessors, each containing reviews/audits of three candidate assessments.
- Prepare one Review Report for approximately 15 Capstone Evaluator, each containing reviews/audits of three candidate evaluations.
- Meet with some VLF Assessors and Capstone Evaluators to discuss report findings, follow up on those requiring continued reviews, and participate in virtual meetings with VLF Assessors on an as-needed basis.
- Liaise with VLF Assessor Leads and Capstone Evaluation Leads regarding any concerns.
- Conduct additional reviews/audits as directed by the Content Manager or their designate (additional compensation will be provided on an hourly basis)
- Provide consultation services to the Content team, as directed by the Content Manager, on potential changes to assessment criteria, rubrics, assessment/evaluation guides, and other resources used by PREP Assessors/Evaluators (additional compensation will be provided on an hourly basis)
What is Your Commitment as a PREP Assessment Advisor?
- The following duties will be shared amongst all Assessment Advisors:
- Prepare for and present onboarding/training = approx. 20 hours
- Review of practice assessments and provide feedback = approx. 25 hours
- Preparation of Review Reports of candidate assessments and evaluations = approx.. 1.5 hours per report
- Approximate total number of reviews/audits per intake:
- Accelerated PREP 2025 (Summer) = 90
- PREP 2025-26 = 90
- Accelerated PREP 2025 (Fall) = 10
- Applicants applying to this role MUST be able to commit to the above duties.
What Do You Need To Succeed?
- LL.B., J.D., and/or Masters of Law.
- A minimum of 7+ years of active legal practice in Canada. Experience in the practice areas of business law, family law, civil litigation, and/or criminal law is considered an asset.
- Successful candidates must be in good standing with their law society, as defined by CPLED, and legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Experience assessing in previous VLF rotations and Capstone Evaluation sittings is a requirement.
- Proficiency in using D2L as a VLF Assessor and Capstone Evaluator is considered an asset.
- Strong critical thinking skills to interpret and critique assignments with a reasonable standard of discretion when following the assessment guides.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including strong skills in the delivery of positive and constructive feedback, both written and verbal, that addresses performance in relation to CPLED’s assessment criteria.
- Access to a computer with a microphone, web camera and a reliable high-speed internet connection.
- Must be reliable and commit to completing the assigned Review Reports during the designated assessment periods.
