Are you interested in becoming a part of aspiring lawyers’ journey to becoming a successful lawyer in Canada? The Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) is a non–profit organization that delivers pre-Bar call legal education and is seeking three (3) Leads for a one year contract.
The Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP) was developed to help future lawyers gain practical legal knowledge and competencies in lawyer skills, practice management, professional ethics, and the attributes needed to successfully practice law in Canada.
Contract Term
1. Accelerated PREP 2025 (Summer) – May 26-August 28, 2025
2. PREP June 2, 2025 – February 12, 2026
*Preference will be given to those applicants who are available for both Accelerated PREP 2025 (Summer) and the PREP 2025-2026 intakes.
What Will You Do as a Lead?
The Lead, VLF Assessor and Capstone Evaluator is one role for the period of the contract.
Each of the Leads will be assigned one of the four assignment groups for which they will provide guidance and support to the assessors and evaluators in their groups.
Each Lead will:
- Review the Assessment Guides for their assigned assignments and assist CPLED’s Content Team with revisions to Assessment Guides.
- Attend 60-minute pre- and post-intake virtual meetings for Lead VLF Assessors and Capstone Evaluators led by the CPLED Content Team.
- Plan and facilitate calibration sessions for VLF Assessors and Capstone Evaluators.
Assess and evaluate candidate assignments along with their assigned assessor/evaluator group members. - Respond to VLF Assessor and Capstone Evaluator inquiries and provide guidance and support throughout the assessment periods.
- Monitor their assigned groups’ progress during assessment periods and communicate issues with members of their group.
- Assist with the resolution of candidate inquiries.
- Prepare for and present at VLF Assessor and Capstone Evaluator training and calibration sessions (two to three sessions for each assignment type in VLF, and one session for each assignment type in Capstone).
- Liaise with the Assessment Advisor(s) regarding any concerns.
- Prepare individual and/or group communications regarding VLF Assessor and Capstone Evaluator and/or candidate issues.
- Encourage active participation in the calibration sessions and lead a collaborative team environment.
- Assist with reviewing appeal materials (additional compensation to be provided on an hourly basis).
What Do You Need To Succeed?
- LL.B., J.D., and/or Masters of Law.
- A minimum of 7+ years of active legal practice in Canada. Experience in the practice areas of business law, family law, civil litigation, and/or criminal law is considered an asset.
- Successful candidates must be in good standing with their law society, as defined by CPLED, and legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Experience assessing in previous VLF rotations and Capstone evaluation sittings is a requirement.
- Proficiency in using D2L as a VLF Assessor and Capstone Evaluator is considered an asset.
- Strong critical thinking skills to interpret and critique assignments with a reasonable standard of discretion when following the assessment guides.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including strong skills in the delivery of positive and constructive feedback, both written and verbal, that addresses performance in relation to CPLED’s assessment criteria.
- Access to a computer with a microphone, web camera and a reliable high-speed internet connection.
- Must be reliable and commit to completing assigned assessments during the designated assessment period and supporting their assigned group(s) to do the same.
