National Indigenous Peoples Day – June 21
June 20, 2022
June 20, 2022
Tuesday, June 21, 2021, marks Canada’s 26th National Indigenous Peoples Day. In 1996 in cooperation with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada created National Aboriginal Day (now National Indigenous Peoples Day). The day is about celebrating the heritage, diverse culture, and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people. The summer solstice was chosen for National Indigenous Peoples Day as many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
Activities and events across the country will highlight the heritage, history and remarkable achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. Check out this interactive map to find activities happening in your community.
