It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Kara Mitchelmore, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO), on Sunday, September 17, 2023. We offer our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones during this difficult time. Dr. Mitchelmore’s outstanding contributions to CPLED and professional education will continue to inspire us for many years.
During her tenure as CPLED CEO, Dr. Mitchelmore brought her distinguished vision and leadership skills to the organization, driving it to new heights. Dr. Mitchelmore was appointed CPLED CEO in March of 2018, and she took on the daunting and exciting role of building the organization and reimagining the Bar admission program for CPLED participating jurisdictions.
“Her drive and determination inspired those around her to strive for excellence and achieve their goals. She set the example for her team to follow and created a culture of innovation and progress,” says Don Thompson, KC, Board Chair. “She consistently made strong strategic decisions to grow CPLED, establishing the organization as a leader in Bar admission education. The CPLED Board of Directors is deeply grateful for all of Kara’s accomplishments and will miss her very much.”
As the CPLED CEO, Dr. Mitchelmore achieved significant growth and incredible success in developing and launching the innovative Bar admission program, the Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP), revolutionizing legal education. Through her tireless efforts, Dr. Mitchelmore expanded CPLED’s participating provinces to include Nova Scotia, and under her guidance, CPLED launched the Legal Research and Writing (LRW) course for NCA Candidates.
Liza Worthington, long-time colleague and CEO successor, spoke about Dr. Mitchelmore with great admiration, saying, “To witness Kara command a room was truly inspiring. She encouraged everyone around her to perform at a higher level by leading by example and offering constant encouragement. Even while commanding a room and never missing a beat, Kara made everyone who worked for her feel valued and heard; she showed kindness and compassion to all. I am proud of the work we did together throughout the years and across multiple organizations, but I am also proud to have called Kara a friend.”
Dr. Mitchelmore’s legacy will live on through her remarkable accomplishments, unwavering dedication to her work, and her love for her family.
Although we mourn the loss of such a great leader, let us also celebrate her life and the many ways she touched the lives of those around her. We invite you to share your condolence messages here and to consider making a memorial donation to the Airdrie Food Bank.
