Capstone Evaluation Overview
The Capstone Evaluation is the final high-stakes evaluation for candidates completing the Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP), which is the Bar admission program for Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. Over the four-day final evaluation, PREP candidates complete assignments in three skill categories:
- legal writing
- oral skills
- practice management, ethics and client relationship management
Experienced lawyers from each participating jurisdiction evaluate each candidate’s assignments using rubrics based on the PREP Competency Framework to determine if the candidate has successfully reached an overall evaluation of entry-level competence to complete PREP.
CPLED is looking for new members for the Capstone Evaluation Development Committee.
Committee Member Responsibilities
Committee members will develop and review Capstone Evaluations for PREP. Members will work closely with the CPLED content team, who will provide committee members with guidance on the development and review processes. Tasks and deliverables that support these two overarching categories include the following:
- draft and edit legal scenarios for candidate assignments for the Capstone Evaluation with a focus on instructional clarity and complexity, which must be at a level that is reasonable for a lawyer new to the profession
- draft and edit evaluation guides
- conduct jurisdictional reviews for legal issues in the three skill categories
- meet virtually as a team to brainstorm and discuss prospective legal scenarios to include in the evaluation
- work independently to develop and conduct legal reviews of potential Capstone scenarios, assignments, and evaluation guides
- complete the required security training
- uphold a steadfast commitment to confidentiality throughout all stages of content development and reviews to ensure program content is protected and secure
The estimated time commitment involved in this role includes the following:
- initial group meetings: two to three meetings of approximately two hours each
- bi-weekly or monthly follow-up meetings: dependant on scheduled deliverables
- individual work: hours as required for tasks assigned throughout the process
The role of committee member does not involve evaluating candidate assignments using the legal scenarios and assignments developed during this process, however, committee members may also be contracted as evaluators under a separate agreement.
Contract Term
Successful applicants must commit to a two-year term on the committee that will begin in mid- to late-October 2024 and conclude in August 2026.
Contractor Compensation
Committee members are contractors of PREP and are not employees of CPLED. The fee for this two-year term contract is $15,000 plus applicable taxes ($7,500 per year over a two-year term). CPLED will submit payment following the conclusion of the development and review process of each of the four Capstone Evaluations that will occur over the two-year term.
Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following qualifications to be considered for this position:
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
- Called to the Bar in Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, or Saskatchewan
- Five+ years of legal practice experience in Canada
- In good standing with your law society
- Extensive experience evaluating PREP Capstone Evaluations
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Access to a computer, microphone, webcam, Microsoft Word and a reliable internet connection
Experience developing educational evaluations is considered an asset. Experience evaluating the March 2024 and September 2024 Capstone Evaluation sittings is considered a strong asset.
